BEWI invests in a new recycling hub in Stockholm

BEWI, a leading European provider of packaging, components, and insulation solutions, invests SEK 1 million in a new recycling hub in Stockholm, Sweden.

BEWI Circular was established in 2018 and has since invested more than EUR 10 million in acquisitions, circular projects and activities aimed at collecting as much EPS waste as possible for recycling.

”We are on a mission to become a fully circular company, as well as leading the change for our industry, and this is another important step towards that goal. The Stockholm hub, which opened in January, lets us collect more used EPS that would otherwise be incinerated. Burning EPS is a waste of a valuable resource and also emits unnecessary CO2”, says Henrik Ekvall, Managing Director, BEWI Circular.

EPS, expanded polystyrene, is a rigid, closed cell, thermoplastic foam material widely used for its shock-absorbing and insulating properties. The material can be reused over and over again in an energy-efficient process. But its reusability depends on reliable chains for collecting and recycling.

”The new hub will have a capacity corresponding to the majority of EPS waste in Stockholm and the surrounding area. The waste will be compacted on-site and then sent to one of our extruder facilities where it will be converted to new EPS”, says Henrik Ekvall.

The location for the new hub is decided based on the Stockholm region’s growing population and its presence of companies within industries depending on EPS, such as the building and construction industry, electronics stores, supermarkets, as well as municipalities. The Stockholm hub will serve as both a drop-off zone for EPS waste and as a collection centre. In addition, BEWI will provide tailored solutions to customers, including installing compactors at customers sites or offering pick-up service of uncompacted waste.
