Flatlantic and BEWI partner up for fish boxes based on recycled material

Certified Recycled EPS

Fish farmer Flatlantic transports fresh seafood in boxes made with Certified Recycled EPS (CREPS) from BEWI

The Portuguese flatfish producer and aquaculture company Flatlantic is using fish boxes made from Certified Recycled EPS (CREPS) from BEWI, which is boxes based on recycled EPS (expanded polystyrene) material. The packaging solution helps ensure the highest freshness of seafood such as turbot and sole, while reducing the environmental footprint of Flatlantic’s operations.

Preserving quality, reducing waste

Branding itself as a “seastainable flatfish village,” Flatlantic brings the sea onto land and oversees the full life cycle of its flatfish, maintaining high standards of animal welfare and product quality. With this approach, processing and delivery only take place on demand, securing freshness and reducing food waste.

Flatlantic wanted a packaging solution that could safeguard food safety and preserve the quality of fresh fish throughout transport, while also lowering environmental impact. Through collaboration with BEWI, the company found the ideal solution: fish boxes made from Certified Recycled EPS (CREPS). These boxes provide excellent thermal insulation and durability while fostering a circular economy.

“EPS packaging is the best solution for fresh fish, ensuring both food safety and the quality of an excellent product. Using Certified Recycled EPS also helps avoid the need for new raw materials and drives the circular economy,” says Laura Roque, Environmental Manager at Flatlantic.

Still safe transportation, just lower environmental impact

Certified Recycled EPS (CREPS) is EPS products based on recycled feedstock. In the production process, a mix of recycled and virgin feedstock is used, and third-party certification (REDCert) ensures that the material’s properties are allocated to the industries and products where they are best suited. The performance and quality of the material are maintained, while the CO₂ footprint is significantly reduced.

“Providing our customers with innovative, circular solutions has long been a priority for us at BEWI. Certified Recycled EPS increases the use of recycled feedstock and offers customers packaging solutions that lower their CO₂ footprint,” says Christian Bekken, CEO of BEWI ASA.
